Personal statement:

18 years experience in leadership positions across the third sector has given me an extensive range of skills and experience.  My career to date has required me to develop excellent organisational management, leadership, networking, negotiation and communication skills.  I have an in-depth knowledge of the third sector and it’s networks across the finance and social enterprise at a global level.  I am an experienced and effective fundraiser and prolific entrepreneur, adept in managing rapid growth.  A commitment to addressing social and environmental problems systemically, plus an optimistic forward thinking attitude, means I am passionate about what I do, in work and in life.

Relevant experience:

Independent (October 2009 – present).  Since becoming independent I’ve turned my focus to developing a number of new-start social finance initiatives for global social enterprise.  One of these includes an initiative to bring a new, actively managed, donor advisory fund for social investors to the UK and Europe.  I’m working in-depth with Blue Ventures, getting ready for a big organisational expansion.  I have instigated OxfordJam, a fringe to the Skoll World Forum.  I’m also doing a lot of advisory, consulting, teaching and mentoring work for individuals and organisations right across the third sector.  My work can be broadly categorised into four areas of activity:

  • Advisory to foundations and corporations on charitable trust and programme development
  • Strategy consulting to a range of new and growing social enterprises and small businesses
  • Innovative events production and development of associated social media, and
  • Teaching and tutoring across a range of academic institutions.

Ashoka’s Director for the UK (May 2006 – September 2009).

  • Responsible for all aspects of Ashoka’s work in the UK
  • Raised in excess of $5 million from the UK’s business and finance community
  • Provided support to more than 150 international social entrepreneurs resulting in numerous substantive financial and capacity building outcomes.

Founder and Chief Executive of London Community Recycling Network (November 2000 – April 2006).

  • Founded and grew London CRN to 16 staff members and a turnover of £750,000
  • Founding member of the Big Lottery’s Community Recycling Programme, securing and distributing £37.5 million of funding to community waste projects across the UK
  • Board member London Recycling Fund and government secondee acting as advisor to government grant and technical assistance funds distributing in excess of £50million
  • Supported social enterprises to secure nine large-scale public sector contracts totalling in excess of £35 million
  • Developed consultancy services delivering 25% of organisation turnover
  • Led the start-up of six large-scale new Community Recycling providers, each with year one turnovers in excess of £600,000

Independent (1992 – 2000). Clients included New Economics Foundation, Royal National Theatre, the East Midlands Development Agency, Greenwich CDA and a myriad of third sector organisations.
